O MĚSTĚ ESZTERGOM


Městečko Ostřihom se nachází na břehu Dunaje, asi 50 km severozápadně od hlavního města Budapešti. Leží v provinci Komárom - Esztergom. Most Marie Valerie spojuje Ostřihom se Štúrovo, městem na druhém břehu řeky, již ve slovenské části. Ostřihom byla hlavním městem Maďarska od 10. století do poloviny 13. století a byla zároveň sídlem uherského krále Bély IV. Ostřihom je také sídlo římskokatolické církve v Maďarsku. Město má křesťanské muzeum (Kerezstzény Museum), nejširší duchovní sbírku Maďarska. Nádherná ostřihomská katedrála - Bazilika je nejrozsáhlejší kostelní stavbou v Maďarsku.

JAK SE TAM DOSTAT


Přes den je k dispozici několik vlakových spojů mezi Esztergom a Budapeští Nyugati Pályaudvar (západní vlaková stanice). Cesta trvá asi 1,5 hodin. Existují i autobusové spoje, některé přes Visegrád a Szentendre. Ze Štúrovo do Esztergom je možné přejít přes most Mária Valéria, což trvá asi 20 - 30 minut. V létě je možné cestovat do Budapeště lodí.

The Basilica

The monumental Basilica is the largest church of the country. In the sacrarium one can admire Grigoletti’s altarpiece, titled ‘Maria’s ascension’, which is the largest painting on a single canvas (13 x 6,5 m) of the whole world. The Bakócz chapel was built in the southern side of the Basilica. The shrines of high priests and burial places of archbishops can be found in the crypt below the church. The crypt has become a popular pilgrim destination. It is possible to visit cupola to admire the breathtaking view.

Cathedral Treasury
Visitors can admire the masterpieces of the world-famous Cathedral Treasury in the upstairs rooms of the Basilica. Hungary’s richest religious treasury, goldsmith and textile collection is significant on a worldwide scale. The most important pieces of the filigrees are the coronation cross from the Arpad era, and the Mathias calvary, that is made of gold and decorated with pearls, jewels.

The Cathedral Library
is one of the richest religious libraries of Hungary. It accommodates 250,000 books including antique codexes and ancient prints.


The Castle Museum

Visitors can admire the remains of the palaces of kings from the Árpad era and the later archbishops upon the castle museum.

Keresztény Múzeum (Christian Museum)

It is located on the second floor of the primate´s palace houses. It houses a rich collection of Hungarian panel pictures and sculpture of the Middle Ages as well as Italian and western-European paintings and handicrafts.

Víziváros (Watertown)

Between the Danube and the hill stretches the Baroque cityscape of Watertown (Víziváros) with its two-towered church dominates the vista. The Víziváros (Watertown) section was named after being built on the banks of the Kis- and Nagy Duna (Small and Great Danube). Its fortresses, walls or bastions can still be seen by the walk on the banks of the Danube.

Danube Museum

The museum is officially called: Magyar Környezetvédelmi és Vízügyi Múzeum (Museum of Hungarian Hydrology and Environmental Protection). It is a specialized museum with exhibits from the whole country. It is situated in the centre of Esztergom. The museum collects, arranges and displays histories, written documents and objects about country’s natural waters.

Babits house

Is the museum of great Hungarian poet Mihály Babits. The memorial museum and its famous autogram-wall attract thousands of visitors.

Saint Thomas Hill

Baroque Calvary is located there, with the Classicist chapel on the top of the hill. It was built to commemorate the heroes who died for Esztergom. There are the swimming pool and the Classicist building of the Fürdő Szálló (Bath Hotel) at the foot of the hill.
On the southern slopes of the hill there is the Baroque Saint Stephen chapel.

Events

In the summer begins the busiest season in Esztergom starting with Gizella Days at the beginning of May and followed by the Withsun Market.

Performances in the Castle Theatre and concerts in the Basilica provide for cultural entertainment.

The Esztergom Summer Festival (30th July-20th August 2007) offers a range of concerts including jazz and classical music.

Summer says good bye to Esztergom with events organized to the memory of Hungary's first king, St Stephen around 20th August.
